Works description

The port of Gioia Tauro is currently the first Italian port for handling containers, being much bigger than commercial ports such as Taranto and Cagliari, but also ports of final destination such as Genoa and La Spezia. In recent years, however, adjustments to the existing quays and infrastructural improvements have become necessary. The purpose of the contract is to increase the competitiveness of the port, the levels of airport security and internal navigability. The project concerns only the “D” section of the port and the interventions have been diversified according to the current state of the quays and the seabed required (Section D1 - 650.00 m, Section D2 - 466.00m).

The works description is as follows:

Section D1 of 650.00 m length

  • Deepening of the seabed up to -17.40 m l.m.m. by dredging;
  • Seabed consolidation operations (by jet-groutin) up to-24.00 m from the l.m.m.;
  • Cleaning of the existing surface by means of water cleaning and scarification of parts of the concrete cover up to bring to light the existing reinforcement, drowned in the new completion casting.
  • Structural consolidation;
  • Realization of a new reinforced concrete rail beam, based on foundations in reinforced concrete of cross-sections arranged transversely to the beam and pushed to a depth of -13.60 m from the l.m.m.;
  • Construction of a 40 cm thick slab, located under the surface of the quay;
  • Creation of a rainwater disposal system and water treatment of the quay and the square behind;
  • Construction of flexible type floor.

Section D2 of 466.00 m length

  • Deepening of the seabed up to -14.00 m l.m.m. by dredging;
  • Seabed consolidation operations (by jet-groutin) up to-24.00 m from the l.m.m.;
  • Cleaning of the existing bulkhead on the sea side.
  • Structural consolidation;
  • Realization of a new reinforced concrete rail beam founded on Ø 1200 piles pushed to the depth of -24.60 m from l.min.m.; the rail beam is anchored to bulb tie rods;
  • Construction of a 40 cm thick slab, located under the surface of the quay;
  • Creation of a rainwater disposal system and water treatment of the quay and the square behind;
  • Construction of flexible type floor.
